Vantropolis: TONY DURKE

Episode Summary

Colby sits down with her husband Tony Durke to chat about his 20-year journey through the varying departments of Vancouver’s film industry, working on all those “Super” shows shot in BC and the time he accidentally leapt through a gun battle scene on set.

Episode Notes

Tony Durke started his film career as a Production Assistant in the Vancouver Film Industry, moved into Locations and then landed in the Lighting Department where he has worked for the past 15+ years on TV series such as Supernatural, Supergirl, Once Upon a Time and the X-Files reboot. He's also recently joined the Art Department in IATSE 891 and worked as a Production Designer on independent films such as Volition, Prodigals and OI.

He and Colby discuss his start at a small film school on Vancouver Island, BC, his big move to Vancouver and why it pays to soak up knowledge no matter what your role in film happens to be. They chat about parenthood and raising their five year old son together, and how film hours can be hard on families. He talks about playing ukulele with WIlliam H. Macy on the set of a feature film, getting hit up for cigarettes by Stephen Baldwin, and the time wrestler Big Show challenged him to a thumb war. That's Hollywood (North)!

If that weren't enough, Tony is also an accomplished visual artist - you can find his work here.
